Benefits of Steel Roofs

Long-life performance: 55% Al-Zn keeps its looks, keeps its integrity

Age: 18 years
Slope: Curved section
Environment: Rural
Location: Aspatria, UK

Not surprisingly, the rural (low level of acidifying pollutants) environment of this UK factory has helped this 55% Al-Zn roof to achieve a stunning performance. Even on a potentially troublesome curved section, 55% Al-Zn is still performing well - only a slight black staining on the drip edge has occurred since the top picture was taken in 1990. The bottom picture was taken in 2002.

Age: 15 years
Slope: < 5 degrees
Environment: Urban
Location: Falun, Sweden

Environmentally friendly - and here’s the proof. Discerning birds have spotted the quality and built their nest next to a ridge cap in 55% Al-Zn, still in superb condition after 15 years in an urban environment.

Despite ponding problems where the panels sagged between purlins (bottom picture), the low slope roof is in superb condition.

Age: 18 years
Slope: 7 degrees
Environment: Heavy industrial and light marine
Location: Rotterdam, Holland

Chemical operations immediately adjacent, a cement factory within quarter of a kilometre, and the sea less than 5 kilometres away. Yet after 18 years in this punishing environment, the roof in 55% Al-Zn is as good as new.

Age: 14 years
Slope: 10 degrees
Environment: Light marine/rural
Location: Leffrinckoucke, France

Although the coast is only 10km distant, this roof remains in excellent condition after 14 years.
The skylights are in fibreglass.
